Nominations are now open for the 42nd instalment of the Bermuda Sports Awards.

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport has invited the public to submit their nominations for the event that will recognise the achievements of Bermudian athletes during the calendar year from January 1 to December 31.

As well as the main awards for male and female athlete of the year, other categories that will be honoured include, junior male and female awards, appreciation award, achievement awards across various age categories and the newly created team of the year award.

Nominations are also open for recognition in participation and achievement at a high standard of performance in international competition, persons who have made contributions to the development and advancement of sport in a non-competitive capacity and special distinction in sport, in recognition of those athletes who have achieved special status or distinction.

“We encourage the public to submit their nominations so that we can all celebrate and support our athletes who have excelled in their disciplines this past year,” said a statement from the ministry.

Nomination forms can be filled out online or alternatively at the Department of Sport and Recreation Headquarters, located on the third floor of Craig Appen House, by the deadline of December 31.

Dame Flora Duffy and Jah-Nhai Perinchief were the two biggest winners in last year’s event, hosted at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club.

Duffy was crowned the Female Athlete of the Year after winning a fourth triathlon world championship and retaining her Commonwealth Games title, while Perinchief collected the corresponding male award after he became the first Bermudian to win an athletics medal at the Commonwealth Games since 1994 when taking bronze in the triple jump.
