Youngsters shine at Primary School Track Championships
Gisele Reid-Rubaine and Aalirah Daniels shared the Toby Colombe award for excellence after both collected an impressive four gold medals at the Primary School Track and Field Championships on Wednesday.
Reid-Rubaine, of Harrington Sound Primary, won the under-9 champion girl title after winning the sprint trifecta of 100, 200 and 400 metres while also leading her team to 4x100 relay success. Saltus student Diamond Morris finished second with 22 points after winning the 800 metres and finishing second in the 400 and fourth in the 200 metres.
Harrington Sound’s Aalirah Daniels won the over-10 girls title with her three wins in the 100, 200 and long jump. Her relay team was also victorious to give her four gold medals. Yara Muhammad took second place after winning the 800 and finishing second in the 200 and 400 metres.
Nico Simmons, from Dalton E Tucker Primary, also won all three sprints to win the under-9 boys title. Harrington Sound’s Theodore Smith was second after finishing runner-up in the 100 and 200 metres and third in the 400.
The under-10 girls title was shared by Kamari Brooks-Gibbons, from Warwick Academy, and Caeli-Grace Dixon from Bermuda institute.
Brooks-Gibbons finished first in the 800 metres and long jump before taking fifth in the 400. Dixon earned her points with a hat-trick of second-place finishes in the 400, 800 and long jump.
Shammaah Darko, from Warwick Academy, was electric on the track in the boys under-10 division when winning the 100, 200 and 400 metres in convincing fashion.
Dalton E Tucker topped the podium again with Shanzae Smith winning the over-10 boy’s title. Smith collected gold medals in the 200 and 400 and finished second in the 100 metres.
Harrington Sound Primary successfully defended the title of Primary School Champions after finishing with 248 points. Saltus Grammar School finished second with 215 points while Warwick Academy claimed the third position with 190.50 points.
Harrington Sound's victory was largely due to an impressive points tally accumulated by their girls, who won their division with 175 points ahead of Bermuda High School for Girls on 109 points, while Saltus finished third with 83.
Saltus won the overall boys title by the slimmest of margins with a one-point advantage over Warwick Academy. Saltus finished on 132 points, Warwick on 131, while Port Royal finished third with 95.50 points.
