Henryk Marszalek romps to maiden Bermuda Open title
Henryk Marszalek is thrilled to have captured a maiden Bermuda Open title at the first attempt in dominant fashion.
The tournament debutant came away with a convincing 4-0 sweep over rival John Orr in a best-of-seven final to capitalise on home advantage at Warwick Workmen’s Club.
“I haven’t played snooker for about 25 years or even longer and coming back into playing again I am absolutely excited to have won and to have beaten so many players on the way,” Marszalek told The Royal Gazette.
It’s an amazing achievement to get to where I have and to know that I am champion for Bermuda’s snooker league is wonderful. Another accolade is winning the title for the league with Warwick I without losing a match, and I am really proud to be part of that. We won the Island Construction Cup as well.
“To be singles champion is quite incredible. I have been showing off to my friends and family and the churches I am involved with gave a big shoutout in one of the Sunday services. That was really nice to hear that people have been praying and thinking about me as I was playing my final match.
“I faith filled so everything that I do is with the Lord close to me and been with me throughout to I attribute a lot to the Lord.”
The 50-year-old, who eliminated Warwick I captain and defending champion Steven Bremar and did not lose a single game on the way to the title, is also happy to have avenged defeat to Orr in this season’s DeSilva Cup competition.
“John beat me in the DeSilva Cup so I was very determined to win that game,” he said. “To beat him 4-0 in the final was quite an accomplishment.”
Meanwhile, Bermuda Doubles quarter-final action featured the team of Todd Dziak and Nadanja Bailey overcoming Stephen Tucker and Keith Smith 2-0 at Warwick Workmen’s Club.
Dziak and Bailey will now face Bremar and Zane DeSilva in the semi-final, with the winner to take on Paul Fedden and Tyler Moniz in the final.
