American coach Tim Mack is heading to Bermuda to work with the island’s successful bowling team.

Mack, 53, will form part of the team’s effort to improve in advance of the Central American and Caribbean Games in Dominican Republic next year.

David Maycock, Damien Matthews, Michael Honore, Blake Raynor, Jamel Bean and Dayvon Tucker secured CAC Games qualification for the third time in a row when they finished tenth at the Central American and Caribbean Bowling Confederation Championships last week.

“We are in the process of bringing in Tim Mack, an American coach,” Bermuda team manager Steven Riley said.

“He’ll be coming down every four to six weeks to help us prepare for the CAC Games. We’re looking at bringing him in August to have a look at the entire national programme.

“He worked with us about a decade ago when we went to the World Championships in Abu Dhabi in 2014 and is one of the top bowling coaches in the world.

“He knows how to prepare fitness, equipment and how to take the team to the level of international competition.

“We’ll also make a decision on which six players we’re sending to the CAC Games. It doesn't mean that the six who qualified will be the same as those going to the tournament.”

Mack’s planned return to Bermuda comes after David Maycock, one of the island’s most experienced bowlers who was part of the team that clinched a silver medal in trios at the CAC Games in Colombia in 2018, identified coaching as a way to produce improved performances

“Everybody knows what we need to do to improve our game,” the 41-year-old said.

“We definitely need sponsors to come on board. We need help from the Government money wise, and we definitely need to get to the next step.

“We also need more coaching because we’re doing this without a coach. We still have a lot of work to do and we’re not satisfied because we want to win. If we get all the resources we need, we’ll become unstoppable.”

Reflecting on the qualification process, Maycock was pleased that the team managed to achieve their goal.

“We went out there with a mission to qualify for the CAC Games and that’s what we did,” he said.

“The overall performance of the team secured qualification. We really appreciate the support we received back at home as Bermudians followed our progress on my YouTube live stream.”

Riley was pleased with the team’s performance as they prepare for some high-level competition.

“Our main target was to secure qualification for the CAC Games,” Riley said.

“The key for me was the team’s preparation prior to going for the qualifiers. They knew it wasn't going to be that easy, so they put more focus on making their spares which is vital for success

“Between now and the CAC Games we have the World Championships in Hong Kong in November. We’ll also have our warm-up for the CAC Games sometime in April or May, but the venue is still being decided.”
