Talented teenagers represent Bermuda in beach volleyball
Teenagers Olivia Gazzard and Sophie Weikl are representing Bermuda in the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation under-18 championships this week.
The event, which takes place from July 7 to 9 in Dominican Republic, is a world championships qualifier and Bermuda have been drawn into pool D alongside United States, Mexico and Anguilla.
Gazzard and Weikl, who are both aged 15, lost their opening match against Mexico 21-8, 21-4 and will take on Anguilla at 3.20pm Bermuda time on Monday. Their final pool game will be against United States on Tuesday.
Head Coach Sean Tucker has accompanied the team to Dominican Republic and is hopeful of a good showing.
“The under-18 Bermuda team has been training with the NextGen Beach Volleyball programme for a few months under the guidance of FIVB coach Rick Beavis,” Tucker said.
“They have worked hard and shown dedication throughout the beach season. They are excited to represent Bermuda outside of the Caribbean, especially at a world championship qualifier and they are eager to demonstrate their skills against the top competitors in Norceca.”
Bermuda Volleyball Association co-president Brandon Sousa is thrilled that his programme’s talented young players are getting to represent Bermuda on the international stage
“This qualifier is a fantastic opportunity for Olivia and Sophie to accelerate their development against top-tier international competition,” Sousa said.
“The BVA is dedicated to nurturing our young Bermuda talent and this tournament offers an invaluable platform for them to gain experience, learn, and grow as athletes. Their participation highlights the BVA's commitment to building a strong foundation for the future of beach volleyball in Bermuda.”
