Island Games day one round-up: football teams start with wins

Bermuda’s football teams started their Island Games campaigns on a winning note on the first day of competition.

The men’s team, fielding an under-23 side, beat Western Isles 2-0 with second-half goals from Joshua Joseph and Keyni Mills giving them victory. They are next in action on Tuesday 3pm Bermuda time against Ynys Mon.

The women’s team, who are defending gold medals after winning the competition in Guernsey two years ago. had to fight back from a goal down at half time to beat Jersey 3-1. Goals from Jaden Masters, a penalty by Khyla Brangman and Jya Ratteray-Smith gave Bermuda the perfect start to the competition and they will next face Isle of Wight on Monday at 8am Bermuda time

Gayle Lindsay, who recently left the island after winning her third Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby finished fifth in the women’s 10,000 metres final. Lindsay crossed the line in 38min 28.29sec behind winner Christa Cain of Isle of Man, who set a new Island Games record of 35:16.33

Jake Brislane (3:58.65) made it through to the 1,500 metres final on Sunday by finishing second in his heat.

Taylor Carrick is through to the quarter-finals of the men’s squash competition after beating Andrew Moar of Orkney 3-0 in the round of 16. Carrick was dominant in an 11-4, 11-6, 11-3 victory and will face Julian Jervis, of Cayman Islands, for a spot in the semi-finals on Monday.

Bermuda’s other squash representatives, Brian Darling and Neil Pohlman were both beaten in the round of 32.

There were some good results on a busy day for the lawn bowls squad. David Leach finished with a 100 per cent record in the men’s singles after beating Steven Williams, of Guernsey, 2-1 and the Falkland Islands’ Ian Barnes 2-0. Leach is one of only two players holding an unbeaten record going into day two.

Barton teamed up with David Leach in the men’s pairs events and Bermuda finished the day with a win, draw and loss from their three matches. Victory over Western Isles, defeat to Shetland Islands and a draw against Falklands Islands leave the duo fourth of the seven teams after day one.

Judith Barton was narrowly beaten 2-1 by Alderney and Orkney in her two games in the women’s singles, but she did fare better in the pairs competition with Tamara Leach. The combination beat the Falkland Islands 11-9 but lost 16-8 to Guernsey in their two matches.

It was a tough day for the badminton squad who lost all three of their matches in the team event. Bermuda were beaten 5-0 by both Orkney and Isle of Man before falling 3-2 to Gotland. Aaron Simmons and Emma Moran-Lee provided Bermuda’s points in the singles.
