Island Games day two round-up: Taylor Carrick into squash final
Taylor Carrick will chase Bermuda’s first gold medal in Orkney when he plays in the final of the men’s squash singles on Wednesday.
Carrick came through two gruelling matches to secure his spot in the final with his quarter-final and semi-finals both lasting more than an hour.
The Bermuda player fought back from two sets down to defeat Julian Jervis of the Cayman Islands 10-12, 6-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-8 in a thrilling quarter-final before prevailing 3-2 in the semi-final against top seed Ivan Flores Vela, from Gibraltar. He will face home favourite Finlay Scott for the gold on Wednesday
Bermuda’s women’s football team continued their fine start to the Island Games with a 2-0 win over Isle Of Wight on Monday.
Jaden Masters in the 69th minute and K'shaela Burch-Waldron in the 83rd minute scored the crucial two goals as the Lady Gombey Warriors moved to the top of Group B with a 100 per cent record.
Bermuda now have 24 hours before their final group match as they take on winless Shetland Islands at 11.30am Bermuda time on Tuesday.
Sean Trott, who won the Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby for the first time this year, finished fifth in the 10,000 metres.
Trott crossed the line in 32min 30.26sec with team-mate Philip Woollins finishing seventeenth in 36:59.30. The race was won by Corrin Leeming, from the Isle of Man, in 29:56.11
Bermuda’s golfers also completed their first rounds with Jarryd Dillas and Damian Palanyandi doing best of the men’s team to finish tied for tenth, six shots off the lead, after shooting 71 at Stromness Golf Club.
Jevon Roberts shot 81 and Jamie MacMillan 85, with the combined scores good enough for Bermuda to be sitting eighth of the 16 teams after round one.
Teenager Sienna Mosquera did best of Bermuda’s female golfers at Orkney Golf Club, shooting 82 to sit twelfth of the 36 competitors. Katrin Burnie is one place behind in thirteenth after her round of 84, with Tracy Burgess and Morgan Lightbourne tied for 25th with scores of 91. Their combined totals mean Bermuda are fifth of the eight squads in the team event.
In lawn bowls, David Leach won one of his two matches in singles competition and sits third in the table going into the final day. Judith Barton is still without a win in the women’s singles.
David Leach and David Barton are six of the seven teams in the men’s pairs event after a draw and defeat in their two games on Monday, with Judith Barton and Tamara Leach fifth of the six teams in the women’s pairs after two defeats on day two.
The badminton team finished their competition in fourteenth and will begin singles competition on Wednesday.
