Sienna Mosquera falters but still in medal hunt
Sienna Mosquera will go into the final round of the women’s individual golf competition with the chance of a medal.
Mosquera, 18, shot an eight-over 78 at Orkney Golf Club to drop to third on the leaderboard after three rounds of competition. But the teenager will be hoping that a return to Stromness Golf Course, where she set a stunning female course record of 65 on Tuesday, will help her chances.
“Today was a very competitive day with the top players holding their games tight,” Mosquera told The Royal Gazette.
“I’m staying positive and strong heading into tomorrow and I’m really excited to get back to Stromness. I’ve had so many people reach out to me from Bermuda sending me really positive vibes, which feels great.”
Mosquera is two shots behind overnight leader Emma Lindman, of Aland, and one shot behind Sophie Beardsall, from Isle of Wight.
Taylor Carrick, who picked up the silver medal in the men’s squash singles, was knocked out of the men’s doubles at the quarter-final stage. Carrick and Neil Pohlman lost 15-8, 15-9 to Matthew Boote and Antony Harkin, from Jersey.
Aaron Simmons was beaten 2-0 by Rúni Oster, of Faroe Islands, in the men’s badminton round of 16.
Gayle Lindsay, the three-times Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby champion, did not take her place in the women’s 5,000m final, skipping the race to save herself for the longest race in the Island Games.
“I decided not to run the 5,000 to give myself a better chance in the half-marathon on Friday,” Lindsay said.
Jake Brislane, who finished fifth in the 1,500 metres on Tuesday, has a chance to win Bermuda’s second medal at the Games when he competes in the 5,000 metres final on Thursday.
