Daley and Selley chosen as flag bearers at Junior Pan Ams
Swimmer Elijah Daley and archer Robin Selley have been chosen to carry the Bermuda flag at the opening ceremony of the Junior Pan American Games.
The two athletes will lead the squad and officials into the Ueno Defensores del Chaco Stadium in Asunción, Paraguay, this evening just hours before competition starts.
The chosen ones will be hoping that they do not do too much damage to their bodies, as both are in action tomorrow, with Selley competing in the women’s recurve archery competition and Daley set to compete in the heats of the 100 metres breaststroke.
There was no chance that either were going to turn down the role offered by the Bermuda Olympic Association and chef de mission David Thomas.
“It’s a real honour to represent my country, particularly at a big competition like this one and I just feel honoured,” Daley said
“It will be a cool experience and I’m so excited for everything that comes along with it.”
Daley will be competing in four events at the Games, the 100 and 200 metres breaststroke and the 100 and 200 metres butterfly, and is determined to give his best.
“Along with worlds, this is my biggest competition and I’m ready to give it everything I have,” he said. “I am going to gain a lot of experience and I’m excited.
“All of my events I’m going to give my best, but I’m a 200 flyer and although I’ve been training for everything, that’s the one I’m hoping to do best in.”
Selley, one of the youngest members on the team at 17, is delighted that hers will be one of the first Bermuda faces to be seen by millions of people around the world at the opening ceremony
“I’m very excited, it’s a big opportunity and I’m very happy that they chose me,” she said.
“I had no idea that they would choose me. From just starting out one day at a BOA Olympic event and now not just representing Bermuda at the Junior Pan American Games but flying the flag, it feels crazy to me. It feels really special and I’m proud to be able to represent Bermuda.”
Selley’s biggest worry is the weather conditions with the wind whipping through Asunción yesterday in a way that might make it difficult to carry flags on 6ft poles. But having been here for two weeks already alongside Jaydon Roberts, she is used to sweeping weather changes
“That’s my biggest worry, as it’s very windy down here, but I’m counting on Elijah to step in and help me if I need it.
“When we first got here, it was boiling. Halfway through, it didn’t stop raining — and now it’s cold and windy. It’s a good job I have gear for every weather possible.
Selley will be shooting for the first time tomorrow morning, but is not setting any lofty goals.
“I haven’t set any expectations, as I’m not entirely sure what to expect, but I’m hoping for a personal best and to hopefully finish in the top half of the field.”
