Jack Harvey qualifies fourth fastest for 200 backstroke final
Jack Harvey may need to swim more than a second faster tonight if he is to claim Bermuda’s first medal at the Junior Pan American Games.
Harvey qualified fourth fastest for the 200 metres backstroke final, finishing second in 2min 3.85sec, with his time 1.11sec behind winner Humberta Najera, of Mexico, who reached the final with the best time in the heats.
He has 1.03sec to find on Brazilian Samuel Lopes De Olivera, who qualified second fastest, and 0.84sec to make up on Chile’s Edhy Vargas.
The final is scheduled to start at 7.09pm Bermuda time.
Harvey was not the only Bermuda swimmer involved in the morning session, with Elijah Daley back in action and Marleigh Howes making her first appearance in the pool.
After competing in the 200 metres butterfly final less than 12 hours earlier, Daley finished seventh in heat four of the 100 butterfly. His time of 56.65 was 3.64 seconds behind heat winner Ulises Cazau, from Argentina. Daley finished twentieth overall.
Howes, one of the youngest girls at the meet, finished eighth in heat three of the 200 metres freestyle in 2:13.51 behind heat winner Maria Yegeres, of Colombia. Howes finished 24th overall.
Archer Jaydon Roberts is in for a big day on Wednesday, as just a day after qualifying for the bronze-medal match in the mixed team recurve event with Robin Selley, he advanced to the knockout stages in the individual event before being knocked out in the semi-finals.
Starting the day in the round of 16, Roberts completed a whitewash of Bruno Nunzi, winning 6-0 before coming through a thrilling match 6-5 against Nanuq Herzog, of Bolivia.
The Bermudian found things easier against Juan Pablo Peralta, of Colombia, in the quarter-finals before ultimately coming up short of competing for the gold medal when losing to Andres Hernandez in the semi-final.
He will compete in the bronze-medal match at 3.44pm tomorrow, just a couple of hours after he teams up with Selley to play Cuba for a place on the podium in the mixed team event.
Selley was beaten in the round of eight in the singles event, losing 7-3 to Sophia Baptista, of Brazil.
