Gatwoine Minors wins inaugural Esports Bermuda competition
Gatwoine Minors came out victorious at the inaugural Esports Bermuda EA FC Tournament held at Game On Sports Bar & Grill on Saturday.
In a competition that brought together some of Bermuda’s best gamers in front of a lively crowd, the 23-year-old Minors defeated Ah-Najae Saunders 3-2 in the final. Antonio Carvelho bested Codi Charles 4-0 to secure third place.
“It was great winning the competition, as I didn’t know what to expect heading into it,” Minors told The Royal Gazette.
“Honestly, using the offside trap, a little bit of luck and shooting more than my opponents is what won it for me.
“The competition was pretty tough. In the semi-finals and the final, I won by only one goal.
“I’ve probably been playing EA FC for about ten to 11 years. It would be great to go international with Esports and I’m always looking or a challenge to get to the next level.”
Adrian Lodge, the Esports Bermuda founder, was pleased with the spirit in which the tournament was conducted.
“The atmosphere was electric and the level of play exceeded expectations,” he said.
“This event showcased the depth of talent we have on the island and is proof that Bermuda is ready to compete on the global Esports stage.
“Beyond the results, the tournament was also a celebration of sportsmanship and professionalism. Even after early elimination, players remained to cheer on their fellow competitors, with the entire group staying to watch the final showdown.
“The camaraderie was evident, with no ill will or negativity, just a shared love of competition and the game.
“While we had 13 participants in the end, they brought their families to cheer them on as they played for the cash prize and the title of EA FC champion.”
After successfully holding its first tournament, Esports Bermuda is planning to continue building on its three core pillars.
“In terms of tournaments and leagues, we want to focus on delivering consistent local competitions,” Lodge said.
“On player pathways, our desire is to support Bermudian players with opportunities to progress on to regional and global stages.
“With regards to community and education, our focus is on fostering learning, teamwork and career development in Esports.
“The organisation is also actively seeking volunteers and partners to help grow the island’s Esports scene.”
