Kaelin Cox began Bermuda’s campaign today at the Wushu World Championships in Brasilia, Brazil, by placing 26th out of 44 in the southern fist discipline.

The taolu athlete was reasonably pleased with his performance but concedes he could have done better.

“I feel like my first performance, open-hand Nanquan (southern fist), went OK,” he told The Royal Gazette. “I am fairly happy with my performance and would give myself an 8.7 out of 10, but we are pushing for 9s.

“I know that I can do better and I feel like I placed and got a good score and result to the way I performed and now know what I need to work on going into my next performances.”

Cox, who warmed up for the championships in a training camp in Peru, is also scheduled to compete in the taolu southern broadsword and southern staff disciplines.

Also representing Bermuda at the championships are Krista Dyer and Ryah Symonds, who are competing in the sanda competition.

Dyer, who won a silver medal at the last Wushu Worlds, in Fort Worth, Texas, is competing in 65kg division and Symonds in the 70kg sanda division.

Dyer is making her fourth appearance at the event, Cox his third and Symonds her first.

Like Cox, Dyer also prepared for the championships in a training camp at the Chengdu Sports University in China.
