Open Mat Bermuda’s team of seven fighters secured five medals at the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Pan No-Gi Championship, which concluded in Hampstead, New York, on Sunday.

Jason McAlpine captured gold in his division (masters four brown belt, middleweight) and went on to dominate the open weight absolute division, securing a second gold medal in a remarkable display of skill and endurance.

Lonnie Bascome (masters three brown belt, lightweight) fought hard to take gold in his division, sealing victory in a tough final match.

The third podium finisher from Bermuda was Ramazan Ramazanov (masters three blue belt, medium-heavy), who earned bronze after a gritty performance in the semi-finals.

Rounding out the medal-winners was James Adams (masters two purple belt, ultra-heavyweight), who claimed bronze.

Initially, ten athletes from the gym were meant to travel. However, due to flight cancellations caused by Hurricanes Imelda and Humberto, Ryan Hopkins, Elijah Richardson and Noah Vieira were unable to make the trip.

For Charlie Patten and Jahmali Bridgewater (blue belts) as well as Reina Maypa (purple belt), it was the first time to compete wearing their new belts.

With countries such as Brazil, Belgium, Poland, Mexico and the United States represented, Aaron Dyer and Chris Regan, the Open Mat coaches, complimented the athletes for leaving a mark at one of the main No-Gi Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournaments in the Americas.

“We couldn’t be prouder of this group,” the coaches said.

“Every single one of them went out there and represented Open Mat and Bermuda with heart, composure and respect for the art.

“From our first-timers at new belt levels to our seasoned competitors, everyone showed the results of consistent, disciplined work.

“To come home with five medals — three gold and two bronze — from one of the toughest tournaments in the world speaks volumes about the dedication and growth happening in our room.

“This is just the beginning — we’ll keep building, learning and coming back stronger.”

“With four podium finishes of seven competitors, the team left a strong mark on this year’s Pan Ams, demonstrating depth, determination and the results of countless hours on the mats.”
