Juniors crowned at badminton championships
Bermuda’s national junior badminton champions were crowned after two days of fantastic action at Somersfield Academy last weekend.
More than 70 players took part in singles and doubles competition from under-12 to under-18 age groups with some exciting battles taking place.
Dezirae Darrell was one of the weekend’s big winners, coming out on top in both singles and doubles in the girls under-18 division,
Darrell beat Paige Lindo 21-6, 21-14 in the singles final before the pair teamed up to take first prize in the doubles competition.
Joseph Lau also made it to the top rung on the podium by winning both tournaments in the under-18 boys category,
Lau got the better of Jadon Spriggs in a titanic battle for the singles title, fighting back from a set down to eventually overcome his opponent 12-21, 21-16, 21-15.
Lau then teamed up with Aaron Lee, who finished third in the singles competition, to beat Max Wallace and Max DeCouto 21-7, 21-10.
Cora DeSilva proved the star player among the under-16 girls, beating Sydney Troake in the singles final and teaming up with Annabel Olutiola to beat Lillian Collette and Sophie McClure 21-16, 21-16 in the doubles final.
Finn Peters fought hard to beat Prince Domingo 24-22, 21-14 in the under-16 boys final, but Domingo earned some compensation when combining with Ryan McLean to beat Peters and Ethan Mello in the doubles.
Kate Pursell became the under-14 girls champion by beating Emmalyn Tothong and she doubled up with victory alongside Aniah Tucker in the doubles. The pair defeating Hanako Kitake and Tothong 21-12, 21-9 in the final.
Dominic Slater came through a stamina-sapping final to beat James Bigley 14-21, 21-19, 21-19 and claim the under-14 boys singles title. JitHom Liew and Praroop Srivastava beat Bigley and Colton Kearns to the gold medal in the doubles.
The under-12 girls singles tournament was won by Madeline McBain, who beat Aleisha Siddiqi 2-15, 15-9, 15-7 in an exciting conclusion to that division. McBain grabbed her second trophy when teaming up with Izzie Branco to beat Siddiqi and Georgia Rose in the doubles final.
Ethan Adelsberg was top dog in the under-12 boys singles after beating Elliot St Laurent. Theo Na and George Estherhuysen beat St Laurent and Ethan Weaver to the doubles title.
