Netball captains mentor young talent in All-Stars matches
Bermuda netball captain Debré Evans and vice-captain Kianté Lightbourne will be mentoring top young talent on All-Star night, which is scheduled to take place at The Berkeley Institute gymnasium on Friday.
The two matches are organised by the Bermuda Schools Sports Federation, in conjunction with the Department of Sport and Recreation.
First to take to the court will be the middle school players at 6pm before the seniors clash an hour later.
Samantha Burrows, a teacher at Warwick Academy, is the coach of the West team, which features players from Warwick, Saltus Grammar School, Mount Saint Agnes Academy and Sandys Secondary Middle School.
Evans and Emma Moran-Lee are in charge of mentoring the East side. Players for this team are selected from middle school champions Somersfield Academy, Dellwood Middle School, The Whitney Institute and Bermuda High School for Girls.
Having missed out on coaching the youngsters last year due to work commitments, Evans is delighted to make a return.
“It’s always refreshing to give back to the younger netballers as they are the future of the sport,” the Bermuda captain said.
“I’ve been giving back to the netball community my entire life, umpiring at schools and tournaments, to finally being able to coach.
“My first year I coached the Eastern high school team and won my first match. Of course the players did all the work, but it’s refreshing to know you helped guide them to that point.
“I’m hoping for some great netball at the 2025 All-Star matches, that everyone including the players can enjoy. A win to go with it would be the cherry on top.”
In the senior schools encounter, the Red team will square off against the Blue side. Featuring for the Red squad, coached by Lightbourne, will be senior school champions The Berkeley Institute alongside Saltus and BHS.
Burrows is taking charge of the Blue team, whose players are drawn from Somersfield, Warwick and CedarBridge Academy.
