Biography of Clarence Hill now available for purchase
A new biography celebrating Bermuda’s first Olympic medal winner has been released by author Jamaka Kamal, the son of legendary Bermudian boxer Clarence Hill.
The book, titled My Father: Bermuda’s First Olympic Medalist, tells the story of Hill’s historic journey to the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, where he won the bronze medal in the heavyweight boxing division to become the first Bermudian in history to stand on an Olympic podium.
For a nation of just over 50,000 people at the time, Hill’s victory was a defining moment in Bermuda’s sporting history. His achievement also gave Bermuda the distinction of being the smallest nation ever to win an Olympic medal
In the biography, Kamal explores both the triumph and the complexity of his father’s life. Through personal reflections and historical research, the book offers readers an intimate look at the man behind the medal, from his early days training at the Pembroke Youth Centre to the pride he brought to the island on the world stage.
“This book is about more than just my father,” Kamal said. “It’s about Bermuda, our history, and making sure younger generations understand the significance of that Olympic moment in 1976.”
The 92-page biography also reflects on the challenges that followed Hill’s athletic success and the complicated relationship between father and son, making the book both a historical account and a deeply personal story.
My Father: Bermuda’s First Olympic Medalist is available on Amazon in e-book, paperback and hardcover editions.
Kamal hopes the book will inspire young Bermudians to pursue their dreams while also preserving an important chapter of Bermuda’s sporting legacy.
“This story belongs to Bermuda,” he said. “It’s a reminder that greatness can come from even the smallest island.”
