More than 50 student-athletes were honoured at the 40th annual Denton Hurdle Memorial Awards last night.

The awards recognise and celebrate the finest primary, middle, and senior school student-athlete and is held in memory of Hurdle, a dedicated sportsman who attended Warwick Academy, Bermuda College, and Dalhousie University.

After completing his degree in physical education, he returned to teach at Warwick Academy. He excelled in soccer, cricket, and volleyball but his greatest passion was rugby and he went on to captain the Teachers Club and was a regular member of the Bermuda national team.

Each school is invited to nominate one boy and one girl for the award. All nominees receive a certificate of recognition and are expected to attend the ceremony.

To be eligible, students must demonstrate active participation, leadership, sportsmanship, self-discipline, dedication, and co-operation. They must also exhibit positive attitudes within the school community. Nominees are expected to be strong scholar-athletes and serve as positive role models. Only students in the final year of primary, middle, or senior school are eligible for award.

This year, Warwick Academy and Saltus Grammar School won all six categories with Warwick sweeping the girls categories and Saltus claiming all three boys’ divisions.

Zachary McGuire took home the top prize in the senior schools boys category, with honourable mention going to The Berkeley Institute’s Jahir Smith Mora.

McGuire, an honour role student, was a member of Bermuda’s successful Davis Cup tennis squad and is ranked the island’s No 1 junior. He is also a regular for St George’s senior men’s football team as well as FC Bascome’s under-18 team.

He was named defender of the year in the under-18 leagues at the BFA annual youth awards and was named MVP for Saltus after winning the over-16 boys knockout football cup. He has been recruited to play NCAA Division I tennis at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut.
