Superb Sims in best finish of the season

Michael Sims smashed a bunch of his personal bests in Tour golf yesterday on his way to a superb ninth place finish at the Nationwide Tour’s Price Cutter Charity Championships in Missouri. The 32-year-old Bermudian, who turned pro almost nine years ago, carded 18-under-par his lowest 72-hole total in any Nationwide event as he recorded four rounds in the 60s.He started with a 69 last Thursday, followed by 67 on Friday to easily make the cut, and on Saturday fired a sensational seven-under 65, rounding out his week with a three-under 69 yesterday. It was his first top ten finish this year.He went into the final day in a tie for fifth before slipping to ninth on the par-72 Highland Springs Country Club in Springfield. That all added up to a pay-day of $16,875, by far his best on the Nationwide Tour.Winner Steve Friesen, of the US, ran away to a five-shot victory with a 262 total to pick up $112,500 out of the $625,000 purse. But Sims was only two strokes behind the five players who tied for third, all of whom collected $28,000.He went into the tournament having missed the cut in his four previous outings. A tie for 29th earned him $4,500 at the Mexico Open late in June and before yesterday his best performance of the year came at the BMW Charity Pro-Am in May where he picked up just over $8,000. When the money listings are released today, Sims should have climbed into the top 100.Saturday’s round saw him sizzle on the front nine with a five-under 31, and he carded just one bogey on the back, coming home in 34. All told he picked up 22 birdies over the four rounds plus an eagle. There were no double-bogeys on the card and just six bogeys. His next tournament, this week, is the $500,000 Midwest Classic at the Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate, Overland Park in Kansas. A year ago that event was won by his virtual namesake Michael Sim, now playing on the PGA Tour.
