Two teams set pace in Goodwill Tournament

Riddells Bay ‘A’ and Lambton Golf Club ‘A’ emerged as the early pacesetters in the Team Net Division following yesterday’s opening round of the Bermuda Goodwill Tournament.The two clubs are currently tied atop the leaderboard after carding identical rounds of nine-under-par 61 at Riddell’s Bay.Representing Riddells Bay ‘A’ this year are Chris Grantier, Cotty Outerbridge, Aaron Smith and Allen Richardson.Only 46 teams are playing in the 59th edition of the event, much less than in previous years, with the downturn in the economy taking toll.Previous tournaments have seen teams playing on four courses each day throughout the four rounds. But this year sees Riddell’s Bay and Port Royal hosting the first two rounds and Mid Ocean Club and Belmont hosting the last 36 holesIn third place in the net division ares Linfield National Golf Club at seven-under-par while five teams, among them two from Belmont Hills Golf Club, are currently tied for fourth at six-under.Defending team net champions Blackpool Club are currently tied for ninth at five-under-par while last year’s team gross winners Carneigie Abbey Golf Club have not returned to defend their title.National Golf Club of Canada ‘B’ are the gross leaders at five-under-par and lead nearest rivals Lambton GC ‘A’ by a single shot heading into today’s second round at Port Royal.The Country Club of Salt Lake ‘B’ lead the Senior Team Net Division after firing a 12-under-par 58 at Riddell’s Bay the day’s lowest round while Lambton Golf and Country Club ‘C’ are among four teams currently tied atop the Senior Team Gross Division at one-under-par.Lambton are also in contention in the Ladies Team Net and Gross Divisions after theor ‘D’ team carded rounds of five-under-par 65 (net) and five-over-par 75 (gross).Kier Smith of National Golf Club of Canada ‘B’ currently leads the professional field by three shots over Steve Manock of Lambton.Local pro Brian Morris of Belmont was the best of the Bermuda players yesterday, lying fifth overall.Matthew Yustin of Lambton C’ is ahead in the Senior Pro field, two shots clear of nearest rival Scott Spence of Lakes Golf Club.Toronto Golf Club’s Johnalee Marshall has a slim one-shot lead over Ann Carroll of Lambton ‘D’ in the Ladies Pro Division.
