Organiser Scott Roy believes that a handful of golfers can rise to the occasion and win the 2012 Bermuda Open that tees off tomorrow morning at Port Royal Golf Course.Defending champion Jordan Mitchell of the US will look to make a successful title defence while top local professionals Dwayne Pearman and Daniel Augustus will be hoping to put their names on the coveted showpiece.Other contenders include amateurs Nick Mansell, Fraser Hunt and Robert Vallis in a field numbering close to 90, similar to last year’s entry.Another player in the field is young English golfer Tom Bayliss who won a car at this year’s Par-Three Championships at the Fairmont Princess course where he carded a hole-in-one.The purse for the pros is $10,000 with the top five taking a share of the prizemoney.“There are a number of golfers who can win the tournament,” said Roy. “Jordan Mitchell has returned to defend his title and Dwayne Pearman and Daniel Augustus could also be lifting the trophy at the end of Sunday.“We also have a few junior golfers who are back from university and who may be able to put on a show.“The numbers are better than we had expected in these times.“Last year was the first time the BGA had combined all the Open with the Amateur Strokeplay Championships.”Roy, who won’t be competing this year as he’s the sole organiser, added: “I am excited this year because the field is very deep with talent.“We have some past champions playing who are looking to prove they are not out of the competition yet. We have big plans for the coming years and hope this event will spring board the BGA and golf on this Island.”Amateur men’s champion Scott Clarke won’t be returning to compete but the rest of last’s winners are in the field amateur ladies’ champion Katrin Burnie, senior men’s champion Hav Trott and senior ladies’ champion Synda Perry.n AJ Bonar, considered one of America’s top golf instructors, will be on hand to hold a clinic at this month’s Bermuda Health Foundation’s Charity tournament on Port Royal.Bonar, who visited for the 2002 event, will offer tips prior to the 8.30am shotgun start of the tournament on June 22.More than 60 golfers ar expected to compete in the event which is a fundraiser for Bermudians studying health sciences overseas.
