Defending champion Mitchell makes strong start

Jordan Mitchell said he was feeling good about his game and that confidence was there for all to see during the first round of the Bermuda Open at Port Royal Golf Course. The defending champion was the only player to shoot below par yesterday, and his two-under par 69 was enough to leave him four shots clear after the first day.Local professionals Daniel Augustus and Camiko Smith are in a tie for second at two-over following opening round 73s. Both were left to rue missed chances during a tough first round, when tricky pin positions and unpredictable greens gave the course its teeth in otherwise good conditions.Kevin Mumford from the Bahamas is a shot further back, while Port Royal professional Dwayne Pearman has some work left to do after an opening round, seven-over par 78 left him nine shots adrift. In the amateur division, Adam Mattatall battled his way around for a four-over 75, two shots clear of 16-year-old Mitchell Campbell who had taken an early club house lead with his round of 77.Also two-shots back are David Smith and Ian Page. Page’s opening round 77 leaves him second in the race for the Net prize, on 69, with Quinton Burch out in front with his opening round 92 giving him a Net score of 67.The ladies division is just as tight, although defending champion Katrin Burnie has her work cut out for her if she is to retain her crown. Burnie’s opening round 98 left her six shots adrift of past winner Tariqah Walikraam, and Ann Symonds.Elizabeth Parsons, the young teen who represented Bermuda at the Island Games last year, is also in the hunt following her opening round of 94.The Seniors Division starts today, with Jeffrey Lindo, Hav Trott and Eldon Rayner all expected to challenge for the top spot.
