Michael Sims fired a blistering eight-under-par 63 at the Plantation Preserve Golf Course in Florida yesterday to bolster his chances of advancing to the final stage of PGA Q School.The Bermudian’s bogey-free round included six birdies and an eagle that left him in a two-way tie for fourth at 11-under-par 202 after 54 holes.Only the top 19 and ties following today’s final round will advance to the demanding five round final stage of PGA Q School to be held later this month.Sims started yesterday’s round at the par-71 Plantation Preserve layout tied for 28th at three-under after 36 holes and quickly began his charge up the leader board with a birdie on the opening hole.He also birdied the par-four seventh hole to make the turn at two-under-par for the round.Even better fortunes awaited the past Bermuda Open champion on the back nine as he carded an eagle at the par-five tenth hole before rolling in additional birdies at the 13th, 14th, 15th and 18th holes to strengthen his bid to get back on one of the USA’s major tours.Sims’ flawless round was only bettered by North Carolina’s Joshua Brock who carded the day’s lowest score of nine-under-par 62.Florida resident Rob Oppenheim (196) currently leads the field by four shots over nearest rival Meen Whee Kim (200) of South Korea. In third is another Florida resident Kris Blanks (201) at 12-under with 18 holes left to play.Sims advanced to the second stage of PGA Q School after narrowly scraping through last month’s first qualifying stage at the Lantana Golf Club in Texas.He completed the 72-hole tournament tied for 18th at four-under-par 284. Only the top 18 qualifiers and ties advanced to the second stage of PGA Q School.The final stage of PGA Q School will be held from November 28 to December 3 at the Jack Nicklaus course at La Quinta in California when players get the chance to secure cards on the PGA Tour and the Web. Com Tour (formerly Nationwide Tour).Sims played on the Nationwide Tour before relinquishing his card two years ago.This year he finished among the top 10 on the eGolf Tour where he managed six top ten showings and earned $54,839 in prize money.He also grabbed national attention after firing an eGolf Tour record 12-under-par 59 in the second round of the Southern Open where he lost to 2007 British Amateur champion Drew Weaver in a playoff.
