Sims fails to make the cut in Brazil

Michael Sims found the going tough at the recent $675,000 Brazil Classic held at Sao Paula Golf Club.

Bermuda’s top professional golfer failed to make the cut at the Web.com Tour event by four shots.

Sims made a sluggish start to tournament after carding a four-over-par 75 in the opening round that included three birdies and four bogeys.

He improved in the second round to raise hopes of progressing to the weekend. But his hopes were ultimately dashed as an even par round of 71- that contained three birdies and as many bogeys — proved insufficient.

It is the second time that Sims has missed the cut in three events on this year’s Web.com Tour. He also missed the cut at last month’s Colombia Championship.

Sims finished tied for 62nd at last month’s Chile Classic with a four round total of 284 that earned the University of Rhode Island graduate a $1,869 payday.

The Georgia-based golfer has so far pocketed $186,163 in career earnings on the Web.com Tour, where he has played in 96 events and managed four top ten finishes and placed in the top 25 on 12 occasions.

Sims earned exemption to some events on this year’s Web.com Tour after reaching the final stage of PGA Q School last December.

Last year saw the past Bermuda Open winner fire himself into the golf history books with a stunning round of 59 at the e-Golf Tour’s Southern Open in Salisbury, North Carolina.

Less than 20 pro golfers have broken the magical 60 barrier since Tour tournaments began, with the likes of Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer among world golf’s elite that have never achieved the extraordinary feat.
