Haddrell wins Strokeplay Championship

Will Haddrell wrapped up the Bermuda Amateur Strokeplay Championship title with a staggering 26 shots at Port Royal Golf Club.Haddrell carded a one-under par 70 for the second successive day the only sub-par rounds of the tournament to take his four day total to 287 (three over).Damian Palanyandi finished second after a 72 that left him at 29 over par while Chris Brough came third (32 over par). The ladies winner was Ebonie Burgess who shot a final round of 83 to leave her at 46 over par.Haddrell, who won the tournament in 2007, said he felt confident of victory after impressively negotiating the first two rounds in difficult conditions.“The first two rounds were in tough conditions but I hit the ball really well and managed to get the ball around and keep it in play” he said.“The last two days the wind held up and I probably didn’t hit the ball as well, but the conditions were easier and I was able to score a bit lower.“It was comfortable today; I felt relaxed and confident with the way I was playing.“I think some of the other players got themselves behind the iron rod the first two rounds and after that it was fairly comfortable for me.”Jeffrey Lindo claimed victory in the men’s seniors (26 over par) while Kathryn Lloyd-Hines won the ladies’ seniors (39 over par).Men’s winner Haddrell has been selected as a non-playing golf captain for next month’s NatWest Island Games on home soil. The former Bermuda amateur champion won gold in the individual and team events at the 2007 Games in Rhodes. He said: “I’m really excited and honoured to be given a captain’s role. I think it’s good for me to be elevated to that (position) and be someone the Bermuda Golf Association look at to lead the team.“I’m confident in our team; Jarryd Dillas has plenty of experience internationally as well as Mark Phillips. It’s a good opportunity for our players and I look forward to helping them get on the podium to win medals for Bermuda.”Dillas and Phillips will be joined by Mitchell Campbell and Jevon Roberts in the men’s Games squad.Burgess, Katrin Burnie and Elizabeth Parson make up the women’s team.
