Sims falls short at Q-School

Michael Sims's bid to regain a tour card will have to wait at least another year.

Bermuda's top golfer failed to qualify for next month's Final Stage of Q-School at this week's Second Stage of qualifiers at the Plantation Preserve Golf Club in Plantation, Florida.

Sims finished the 72-hole qualifier tied for 38th with a four-day total of one-under-par 283.

Only the top 20 and ties advanced to the Final Stage of Q-School.

Sims started yesterday's final round tied for 49th, five shots adrift of the final qualifying position.

And although he managed to climb 11 places up the leaderboard, a final round of even-par 71 was not enough to carry him across the line.

Sims's last round contained three birdies and as many bogeys.

The former Bermuda Open winner peaked in the second round, firing a sizzling six-under-par 65 to thrust himself thick in the hunt.

But a three-over-par 74 in the penultimate round resulted in Sims losing precious ground to all but end his hopes of qualifying for the Final Stage of Q-School.

Sims, who turned professional in 2002, earned a year's exemption at second-tier tour level in 2006 — then known as the Nationwide Tour — with a view to becoming the first Bermudian to earn playing rights on the prestigious PGA Tour.

He lost his tour card the next year but has since managed to earn partial exemption to the Web.com Tour.

Sims finished 123rd on this year's Web.com Tour money list with $30,201 in earnings.

He played in 17 events, making four cuts.

His best finish was a tie for ninth at the BMW Charity Pro-Am Presented by Synnex Corporation.

Nathan Tyler, who finished with a four-round total of 263, 21 under par, won the Second Stage of Q School by two shots from Dan Berger, with Jon Curran rounding out the top three in the field in 270.

Florida resident Berger was among five players who carded yesterday's lowest round of three-under-par 68.
