Golf siblings Oliver and Darina Betschart continued their good form on the Southern Texas PGA Junior Tour in the United States.

Oliver demonstrated why he was the recipient of a Junior Achievement Award at last weekend’s National Sports Awards ceremony by finishing second in his age group in an 18-hole event at Landa Park Golf Course on Sunday and third overall in the 36-hole Spring Break Classic at Lakecliff Golf Club that concluded on Tuesday.

“Sunday was more of a test run and a warm-up round for the bigger event on Monday and Tuesday, but I still played well,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“All in all I was happy with my round and second place isn’t bad, even though obviously I wanted to win.”

The 15-year-old came in at even par after carding five birdies and the number of bogeys during his stroll around the par-71 layout.

“Sunday was a solid round. David [coach David Ogrin] and I have been working on a few putting techniques and they have been working out pretty well,” he added.

“Obviously the bogeys were disappointing but I held it together and got a few comeback birdies.”

The promising player, who made his PGA Tour debut in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course last November, was high on confidence heading into the Spring Break Classic 24 hours later.

He was tied for fourth, three shots off the lead heading into the second and final round and carded an even par 71, which included three birdies and three bogeys, to secure a second successive podium display in three days.

“A third-place finish and being one shot off the lead in my last tournament was a good experience,” Oliver said.

“I played really well and really didn’t think there were many mistakes in there. Just a couple of putts didn’t drop that were pretty crucial for me, especially towards the end and I really would have liked to make a couple more.

“It’s obviously a little disappointing not to win but I had a lot of fun. I really enjoyed myself out there and hopefully I will be back next year to get the win and the gold.”

Betschart’s sister Darina also enjoyed after finishing second in her age group in Sunday’s STPGA event at Landa Park.

“I was really pleased and I played with some of the same girls that I have in previous tournaments; one that just beat me last time and now I beat her,” the LPGA hopeful said.

It was the third successive podium finish for the 12-year-old at this level after claiming the girls 11-12 title and finishing second overall among girls aged 18 and under in her previous outing at Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin, Texas. She also finished third in her age group on her tour debut at Shadow Glen Golf Club last month.

“It is good competition and I cant wait to play in the next tournament,” she added.

“I have been using some different clubs and still trying to get uses to the distance. My drives are really good but I need to work on my irons.”
