Jarryd Dillas secures BGA Monthly Medal at Mid Ocean
Jarryd Dillas feels his game is “trending in the right direction” after savouring victory in Bermuda Golf Association’s Monthly Medal at Mid Ocean Club on Sunday.
The experienced amateur carded an even-par 71, which included two birdies and as many bogeys, to win the 18-hole strokeplay event by two shots and capitalise on home advantage and favourable weather.
“I was happy with 71. Mid Ocean is my home course and where I play the majority of my golf, so I definitely think that factored in and gave me a bit of an advantage, especially on the greens,” Dillas told The Royal Gazette.
“My game is trending in the right direction again, so hopefully I can continue improving in the run-up to the Stroke Play in June and Island Games in July.”
Oliver Betschart carded a two-over 73 to finish runner-up.
The promising 16-year-old was one under at the turn but fell off the pace after picking up three bogeys on the back nine. That put paid to any hope of a second straight victory after he finished tied with winner Chris Smith in the final round of the Gosling’s Moongate Tour championship at Tucker’s Point Golf Club last month.
“Struggled with the fast green speeds and didn’t make many putts, but overall happy with the my game,” Betschart said.
James Godwin shot a five-over 76, which included two birdies and seven bogeys, to round out the top three a farther three shots back of Dillas.
Tracy Burgess shot 86 to clinch women’s honours by six shots. Katyna Rabain carded a 92 to finish runner-up and Morgan Lightbourne 95 to secure third.
Junior Lewis MacFarlane carded 89 to top the field in the men’s second flight, while top distance runner Lamont Marshall pipped Padraig Mulry for second on retrogression after both players carded 91.
“What a great day for golf at the Mid Ocean Club,” Darrin Lewis, the BGA general secretary, said.
“The weather was spectacular to go along with the great course conditions and challenging pin placements.
“Congratulations to Jarryd Dillas, who captured the top spot on the leaderboard.”
