Oliver Betschart disappointed despite best show of year on AJGA Tour
Oliver Betschart produced his best showing of the year on the American Junior Golf Association Tour in the Dominican Republic.
The 16-year-old amateur grappled with challenging weather and course conditions on the way to finishing tied for 22nd among the field of 51 at the AJGA Dominican Junior Open at the Punta Cana Resort & Club.
Betschart finished on 12-over 228, with his finishing position an improvement on his previous showing on the AJGA at the Panama Junior Open in February, where he placed 33rd.
The young golfer was disappointed with his performance in Dominican Republic but is dertemined to take away positives from the experience.
“It wasn’t the finish I was hoping for, but definitely a week full of valuable lessons,” Betschart told The Royal Gazette.
“I didn’t quite have my best stuff, but I stayed composed and kept grinding. We take the positives and move on to the next one.”
The two-times Gosling’s Moongate Tour Championship winner produced rounds of 79, 73 and 76 in what was his second appearance on the AJGA Tour this year and fifth overall.
“The course was in amazing shape, firm, fast and really well maintained, but conditions were tough,” Betschart said. “It was hot, humid, and super windy all week and I felt like I was back in Bermuda with how strong the wind was.”
American Jaden Peterson, of Florida, won the boys title by three shots with a three-under 213.
Girls honours went to Betschart’s friend and 2024 Butterfield Bermuda Junior Championship girls winner Carlee Meilleur, of Canada, who finished two shots clear of the field at one-under 215.
“A cool part of the week was seeing my good friend Carlee Meilleur win the girls division,” Betschart said.
“She also won the AJGA event in Bermuda last year, so it was awesome to see her keep the momentum going.”
