Damian Palanyandi romps to BGA Monthly Medal honours
Damian Palanyandi blazed a career-best 64 to run away with Bermuda Golf Association Monthly Medal honours at Port Royal Golf Course.
The top amateur blitzed the field on the way to a commanding nine-shot victory at the Southampton golf course.
Palanyandi was at the peak of his powers with the putter, carding an eagle, six birdies and a sole bogey, and hit 16 greens in regulation to capitalise on the favourable playing conditions.
“I put a new 2 iron in the bag which helped me hit more fairways and reach all three par-5s in two. I hit 16 greens and made a few putts, so it worked out well for me,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“Conditions were ideal, wind was light but steady out of south, while the course was set up well and played fair. The greens were consistent throughout the day and rolling nicely.”
The player’s phenomenal display helped compensate for withdrawing from the Bermuda Amateur Match Play Championship at the semi-final stage after slipping and injuring his wrist in wet weather.
“This was a personal best for me and I took home a lot of positives from the round,” Palanyandi said.
“I am hoping I can build on that coming into the Amateur Stroke Play Championship and Island Games
Johnny Bart was also pleased with his display as he carded a two-over 73 to pip Spencer Wideman for runner-up accolades by a shot.
“Other than a few loose drives I thought I played pretty solid golf, which led to a decent round,” he said. “I felt pretty confident the whole day and played well.”
Also impressing in the 18-hole event was former professional footballer and national coach Kyle Lightbourne, who finished in a three-way tie for fourth at four-over 75 which included top amateur Jarryd Dillas.
