Camiko Smith falters in Lincolnshire
Camiko Smith is headed back to the drawing board after bowing out of The Q Hotels Collection Open in Lincolnshire, England.
The Bermudian professional began the second round of the 54-hole event five shots shy of the projected cut at one-over and ties after an opening round of 79 left him with some catching up to do.
However, his misfortunes continued with an 83 placing him at 16-over after 36 holes and dashing any hope of progressing to the final round of the Clutch Pro Tour event.
He could not have asked for worse start having made the turn at five-over after picking up three bogeys and a double at the par-5 10th hole.
Smith also struggled on the back nine where he carded three additional bogeys and only his second birdie of the tournament at the par-5 17th green.
The 39-year-old spoke about the challenges he encountered with the course at Forest Pines Golf Club.
“The course is pretty narrow with very firm fairways,” he said. “They had a lot of rain here a couple of weeks ago and sunshine after that, so it just got hard and firm and tree line,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“There’s tall trees and wind is moving around everywhere. The greens are fairly undulating and challenging, while bunkers are steep and challenging as well.
“It calls for basically just being precise and not hitting a lot of drivers. My game plan called for not hitting a lot of drivers. I hit a lot of irons basically off the tee to set myself up for making a good score.”
Smith’s opening round 79 included five bogeys, a double and a birdie that left him tied for 102nd among the 137-strong field.
Overnight leader Tom Plumb, of England, held a two-shot advantage over the rest of the field with three holes remaining and nearest rivals and compatriots Callum Farr and Thomas Thurloway both having completed their rounds.
