Johnny Bart secures spot at Canadian Junior National Championships
Johnny Bart is bursting at the seams with excitement after securing a spot at the Canadian Junior National Championships.
The Saltus Grammar School student finished tied for 33rd in the Ontario Junior Provincial Championships at Lindsay Golf and Country Club, which was good enough to earn an invitation to showcase his budding talents at Gowan Brae Golf and Country Club in Bathurst, New Brunswick, from August 11 to 15.
“It was a great week where I gained a lot of experience, and I’m very excited that I played well enough to qualify for the national championships,” Bart, 16, told The Royal Gazette.
The youngster carded rounds of 75, 76, 72 and 71 to finish the 72-hole tournament at six over par. He was in a field of 140 players featuring the best under-19 golfers, some whom have already committed to Division I schools in the United States.
“The entire week I felt pretty confident,” Bart said. “I kept reminding myself that this was an opportunity and a privilege, so I just did my best to stay focused and take in all of the experience.
“On the last day I knew I was around the cut line for nationals, which created some nerves. But I just did my best to make sure I was making committed swings the entire time.”
Bart impressed competing in the Fecchio Cup at Turtle Hill Golf Course last December, when he battled blustery conditions on the way to finishing third behind winner Oliver Betschart and Matthew Roberts in the Blue Division.
