Golfing siblings Oliver and Darina Betschart again underlined their huge potential with fantastic performances on Tuesday.

Oliver Betschart finished fifth in the Optimist Junior Golf Championships at the prestigious Trump Doral resort after a final round of 75 on the Blue Monster course left him four shots behind winner Kaden Frierson, of the United States.

Betschart had been tied for the lead overnight and was still in the hunt for a top-three finish when tied for second on the 18th tee but a double-bogey six on the final hole cost him two spots on the leaderboard.

However, scores of 70, 71 and 75 in the 54-hole tournament will have given him tremendous confidence as he prepares to go on the hunt for medals at the Junior Pan American Games in Paraguay in a couple of weeks.

Oliver’s sister, Darina, has put herself in prime position to win at the Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championships in Puerto Rico.

Darina was the only player in the girls 11 to 13 age group to shoot under par, with her score of 69 (three-under) good enough for a five-shot lead over Isabella Ramadeen, from Trinidad & Tobago.

The 54-hole tournament at the Grande Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande also features Bermuda representation in the shape of Arman Newton, Johnny Bart and Lewis MacFarlane.

Newton fared best in the 18 and under flight, with his score of four over good enough for a tie of tenth after the first round. Bart is two shots further back and in thirteenth position.

MacFarlane is competing in the 11 to 13 age group and his score of 17 over puts him in fourteenth place.
