Darina Betschart crowned Caribbean junior champion
Darina Betschart became one of Bermuda’s youngest regional champions after winning her age group at the Caribbean Amateur Junior Championship.
Betschart dominated the 11 to 13 age group at the Grande Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande to win by an astonishing 21 shots after leading for the duration of the 54-hole tournament.
The young golfer shot rounds of 69, 70 and 73 to finish as the only player under par. Her winning score of four under would also have been good enough for her to have been crowned champion in the two older age groups.
Betschart, the younger sister of talented teenager Oliver, was not the only player to represent Bermuda in Puerto Rico with Arman Newton, Johnny Bart and James MacFarlane also in action.
Newton finished best of the Bermuda boys, ending the 18 and under tournament in ninth position on ten over. That was 13 shots behind local winner Evan Pena but 12 shots ahead of compatriot Bart, who finished thirteenth.
MacFarlane finished fourteenth in the 11 to 13 age group.
