Darina Betschart thrilled with Caribbean success
Darina Betschart hopes to build on her historic victory at the Caribbean Amateur Junior Championships in Puerto Rico last week.
The promising golfer produced a dominant display to capture the girls 11 to 13 title by an astonishing 21 shots and become the first local player to be crowned champion at the event.
“It was a wonderful experience to play for the Bermuda junior team and bring back a trophy,” an elated Betschart told The Royal Gazette.
“This is definitely one of my bigger achievements to date and I hope that I can use that going forward.”
The 13-year-old carded rounds of 69, 70 and 73 to finish as the only player under par at four under and led her division throughout the 54-hole event held at the Grande Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande.
“My game was really strong throughout the whole three rounds and I think the course suited me nicely,” Betschart said.
“My playing partners were so nice and I really enjoyed playing with them. I look forward to playing in this tournament again next year.”
Betschart is the sibling of fellow golfer Oliver, who is delighted over her recent success in the Caribbean.
“I am really proud of what she achieved and especially shooting under par for the tournament and also winning by such a large margin,” he said.
Betschart was among a group of local golfers that represented Bermuda in Puerto Rico last week, including Arman Newton, Johnny Bart and James MacFarlane.
Newton finished ninth and Bart thirteenth in the boys 18-and-under division, while MacFarlane finished fourteenth in the 11-13 age group.
