Oliver Betschart ‘proud’ of Junior Pan Am Games debut
Oliver Betschart has expressed delight over his performance at the Junior Pan American Games in Paraguay.
The 17-year-old golfer battled through adverse weather conditions and tight fairways and greens on the way to finishing tied for fourteenth in the individual event at Asunción Golf Club.
Betschart signed off with a 79 in breezy and cold conditions on Saturday to finish the 54-hole tournament at 20-over 236.
Despite placing well shy of the podium, the promising amateur leaves Paraguay with his head held high.
“The tournament had its ups and downs,” Betschart told The Royal Gazette.
“I found myself in some difficult situations out of place, but I am proud of how I handled myself and I was always looking to the next shot and never giving up.
“‘It was a fun and enjoyable week. It has been great seeing some of my friends that I have made over the years playing in different tournaments.
“The support from the Bermuda Olympic Association and Bermuda Golf Association has been great and I am proud to be representing my country.”
Overnight leader, Guatemalan Gabriel Palacios (216), finished two shots clear of the the field to clinch the gold medal, with Paraguay’s Lopez Fernandez (218) pipping Puerto Rican Alejandro Caraballo (218) for the silver medal.
Betschart was the last local athlete in action at the Games, which also concluded on Saturday.
Bermuda won three medals in Paraguay, with sailor Sebastian Kempe and sprinter Caitlyn Bobb both earning silver and swimmer Jack Harvey a bronze.
