Quinton Sherlock Jr went wire to wire to claim a maiden Johnnie Walker Classic title at Ocean View Golf Course on Sunday.

The professional bounced back from a poor start to the final round on Sunday to win the 36-hole championship for the first time by two shots at one-over 141.

“It’s always a good feeling when you come first,” Sherlock told The Royal Gazette. “When you enter tournaments that’s always your objective so I am happy I was able to pull this one off.”

The 46-year-old got his tournament off to a flyer with an opening round five-under 65, which included seven birdies and a double bogey, to carve out a three-shot advantage over the rest of the field.

“Yesterday [Saturday] was a solid round,” he said. “I hit the ball well and putted well, and as you can see put myself in position for today, so I was very happy with my round yesterday.”

Sherlock was pegged back after playing the front nine in the final round at four over, but he managed to steady the ship after making the turn to finish six-over for the round and proudly don the coveted yellow jacket.

“I was a little bit shaky but at the end of the day it’s just about getting your foot across the line, and I managed to do that,” he said.

“The idea was to come out today and regulate and things were a little unsteady. But as you can see, I managed to keep things together somewhat.

“It was a rocky road but I’m grateful for the experience. I learnt a lot out there about myself, about my game and looking to go from strength to strength.”

Fellow professional Justin Madeiros pipped amateur winner Fraser Hunt for second on retrogression after both players finished at three-over 143.

“I am very pleased and it wasn’t easy,” Madeiros said. “The greens were rolling real fast and it was a little more wind today.”

The tournament debutant shot the lowest score of one-under 69 in the final round, which included four birdies and three bogeys, and was the only player to come in under par on the day.

“Today the greens were rolling a bit more consistent than yesterday. It was a little easier to judge the pace of putts which made it easier to make birdies and also par saves,” he said.

“Today I had a little bit more understanding of the speed so that’s what gave me that little advantage to get that under par.”

Hunt was happy to finish as top amateur and third overall.

“It was a great weekend being out here at Ocean View,” he said.

“Coming in I was still a little rusty, a little nervous. I kind of got through yesterday and realised I was probably in a position where I was far enough back and did not have too much pressure.

“I went out and played some good golf early on today and kind of got my way back into it. It was challenging out there, a little breezier today, and all in all very happy to have put two pretty solid rounds of golf together.”

The 37- year-old, who was also making his tournament debut, was surprised to finish as low amateur.

“That’s a bonus and unexpected,” he said.

“I kept the scorecard pretty clean and missed one or two short putts coming in that might have given me a chance overall, but all in all it was a very good weekend and I am very happy.“

Fellow amateur Roger Brangman finished fourth at four-over 144, with defending champion, professional Camiko Smith, rounding out the top five a farther shot back.

Craig Christensen (147) won the senior division and was fourteenth overall, while Ebonie Cox (155), the sole woman competing, finished 21st in the field of 61.
