Ebonie Cox hopes to capitalise on her previous experience on the Sapphire Golf Tour in Atlanta, Georgia, next week.

The top local women’s golfer will be among the field battling for honours and a share of the prize money on offer at the luxurious Château Élan Golf Club.

It will be Cox’s second appearance at this level after she finished an impressive third and earned $2,500 in prize money in the tour’s inaugural event in Maryland last month.

“I learnt a lot from the first stop and think I’m more prepared this time around,” Cox told The Royal Gazette.

“I also have my husband [Darius] on the bag this time around. He brings me a different level of comfort, so hopefully that shows on the course. I’m proud of myself for just making it there again.”

Cox is feeling inspired heading into her next event after securing a top-three finish on debut.

“It showed me I can still compete,” she said. “I came back from the last stop ready to try to get better every day.

“One key thing for me at the last stop was a junior girls clinic. To see the joy, excitement and admiration from them really put things into perspective for me. This tour is important.”

As for her present form, Cox said: “It’s sport, so whatever form shows up on the day I think I’m experienced enough to play with it. Overall, I’m pretty happy with where my game is at, though.

“I’m tired but excited. I love to still compete, so I’ll make sure I’m rested and ready to go.”

Action gets under way at Château Course, one of three at the resort, on Monday.

The Sapphire Golf Tour is a premier developmental circuit dedicated to increasing diversity in professional golf by creating competitive opportunities for African-American women. Designed to bridge the gap between collegiate and elite-level competition, it provides a platform for rising talent to compete, earn and gain the exposure needed to excel in the sport.

Cox is thrilled to do her part in helping the tour to achieve its objectives.

“This is one of the reasons I wanted to do it, and I am just honoured to be a part of a tour built for Black women,” she said.
