Young golfer Arman Newton aims to build on success
Patience appears to be paying off for promising golfer Arman Newton, who enjoyed considerable success last year.
The Saltus Grammar School student achieved an impressive treble by winning the ICS Cobra Puma Junior Championship, the Tucker’s Point Club Championship and the Fecchio Cup to underline his potential
“Overall, I’d sum up the season as a solid step forward in my development,” Newton told The Royal Gazette.
“I learnt a lot over these tournaments, such as staying consistent and handling the pressure.
“The biggest key to my success was staying patient throughout my rounds and trusting good opportunities would come, not trying to force anything during my rounds and playing consistent golf helps me a lot.
“I made some important changes, especially focusing more on course management and decision making. I also spent a lot more time refining my short game, which helped me save a lot of shots across tournaments.”
Winning the Tucker’s Point Club Championship was especially sweet for Newton as he became the youngest player to win the title.
“It felt incredibly special to become the youngest club champion at Tucker’s Point,” he said.
“ It was a proud moment and a good reminder that the work I’ve put in is paying off. Ever since I was little I’ve played at Tucker’s Point with my dad, so winning the club championship there meant a lot to me.”
It was not all plain sailing with the 16-year-old also enduring his share of struggles on the golf course last year.
“There were definitely some disappointments,” Newton said.
“In Canada I didn’t feel like I played my best golf, which is always frustrating. Nonetheless, I learnt a lot from those tournaments which is very important.”
The teenager now hopes to build on his success this year.
“My goals for the new year are to keep improving my consistency, sharpen my mental game and try to test myself in stronger fields,” he said.
