Oliver Betschart and Eric West’s hopes of securing a spot in a PGA Major at the Latin America Amateur Championship were dashed after missing the cut at the Lima Golf Club in Peru on Friday.

Betschart started the second round in contention of making the 36-hole cut after finishing tied for 32nd in the 107-strong field in round one but came up short at the halfway stage after shooting 79 to bow out at 12-over 152.

It is the second time he has failed to progress beyond the second round after missing the cut on his tournament debut in Buenos Aires, Argentina, last year.

Tournament debutant West faced an even more daunting task of progressing through to the weekend after starting the day tied for 80th. He performed better in round two, carding a 75 to sign off at 14-over 154.

The top 50 players plus ties all advanced to the final two rounds.

The winner of the 72-hole tournament will receive an invitation into the Masters and exemptions into The Open, US Open, The Amateur Championship and the US Amateur Championship.
