Betscharts rise to top at Puerto Rico Junior Championship

Darina Betschart and Lewis MacFarlane on the range in Puerto Rico

Darina Betschart is leading the charge for Bermuda’s golfers at the Puerto Rico Junior Island Championships.

Betschart leads the 15 and under age group at the Grand Reserve Golf Club after shooting rounds of 83 and 79 to sit at 18 over, five shots clear of her nearest challenger, local player Marena Fontanent, with a round to play.

Her score is also good enough to be tied for seventh overall when results from all age groups were collated.

Betschart’s brother Oliver and Arman Newton are representing Bermuda in the Boys international division, with Betschart tied for eighth among a stellar field of 48 entries from around the region.

After being tied for the lead after an opening round of 71, Betschart slipped back after a second round of 78 to sit on 5 over with 18 holes to play, six shots behind clubhouse leader Guilherme Yoshikawa, from Brazil. Newton is tied for 32nd after rounds of 79 and 84.

The youngest member of team Bermuda in Puerto Rico is Lewis MacFarlane, who is third in the 13 and under boys division. MacFarlane has produced rounds of 80 and 83 to sit nine shots behind local player Carlos Isaac with a round to play.

While those Bermudians take their chances abroad, Sienna Mosquera is competing on home turf in the Bermuda Triangle Collegiate Challenge at Port Royal Golf Course.

The tournament featuring 11 American colleges and some of the game’s brightest female talent got under way on Monday with 36 holes and Mosquera, representing LeHigh University, is tied for 29th of the 67 entrants on 19 over after rounds of 80 and 81.

With one round left to play on Tuesday, Ailsa Brannock of Stetson University, heads the field at 4 over, with Bella Kent of Wofford College a shot behind and Bucknell University’s Sophia Bardunias in third on 6 over.

In the team event Stetson look hard to catch with their combined total of 31 over leaving them 17 shots clear of Wofford with Upstate Albany another shot back in third.
