Bermuda will be among the countries battling for honours at next week’s North America Cup in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

This island’s nine-member team consists of captain Sa-Qui Robinson, Arman Newton, William Weston, Grayson Tavares, Ramsey Soutter, Lachlan Soutter, Max Parry, Damian Moniz and Kailia Matthews, who will pit their skills against junior teams from Canada, Guatemala and hosts Mexico.

Bermuda Golf Association president Craig Brown said development trips such as this play an “important part” of the organisation’s junior golf programme and human development.

“It is in our mandate to build better citizens through golf,” he said.

“We want our junior athletes to embrace competing internationally, experiencing new cultures, golf formats and building relationships with players from other countries.”

The North America Cup will be played over three days with players experiencing different formats of team golf. They will compete as individuals, pairs and as a team, accumulating points through head to head competition.

This format provides the participants with a different experience from the individual tournament golf they play throughout the year.

The tournament will be held at the Greg Norman designed Vidanta Vallarta golf course, which hosts the PGA Tour’s Vidanta World Mexico Open, from August 24 to 26.

Robinson, Newton, Weston, Tavares and Ramsey and Lachlan Soutter are competing in the Junior Boys’ division, Parry and Moniz in the Bantam Boys’ division and Matthews in the Bantam Girls’ division.

The island’s junior golfers, who are being supported by Kathleen Moniz and Gareth Tavares, are presently involved in a training camp in Toronto before departing for Mexico on Sunday.

The BGA has thanked Earl Fritz and Shayne Dysart of the Canadian Junior Golf Association, Henry Brunton and Jon Kiru for their assistance with the two-day training camp in Toronto and for supporting the island’s players during their preparation.

The association is also thankful to Xavier Villeneuve and the Mexican Junior Golf Federation for hosting the participating countries and for bringing them together for the event.
