Freddie Jones blazes into history books at Ocean View
Freddie Jones made history after becoming the first player to claim honours in a play-off in the ICS Tires Cobra Puma Junior Championships at Ocean View on Tuesday.
Jones defeated overnight leader Fletcher Logie on the first extra hole at the Devonshire golf course’s par-3 9th green to claim the boys 14-18 title in dramatic fashion.
“This is the first year that we had to go to a play-off to determine the overall champion in the boys 14-18 age group and first ever we’ve had in that particular event,” tournament director and Ocean View head professional Oliver Pitcher Jr told The Royal Gazette.
“There was a tie between Freddie Jones and Fletcher Logie, so they had a one hole play-off, and Freddie came out on top to earn his title as the boys 14-18 division champion.”
Nathan Carreiro finished third to round off the boys 14-18 podium.
Defending champion Lewis MacFarlane retained the boys 11-13 title, with Michael Hinwood and Joshua Cann finishing second and third respectively.
Bradford Laing topped the field in novice division followed by James Thuell and Heath Kemp, who rounded off the top three.
Defending champion Darina Betschart was the only player to compete in the girls division.
“Congratulations to the winners of the different divisions and to all of the kids for being a part of this year’s event,” Pitcher said.
“It was a very successful event and the kids enjoyed themselves. There was a lot of positive feedback from both the kids and the parents, and we had some amazing prizes for the kids.”
Pitcher also thanked tournament sponsors and his fellow organising committee members for their support behind the scenes.
“This was the fifth year in a row Island Construction has been onboard as the sponsors, so I definitely want to thank them,” he said.
“It’s a lot of work that goes into events like this behind the scenes that people don’t see, so thanks to my team, which consists of Darrin Lewis, Ebonie Cox, Quinton Sherlock Jr and Andrew Trott for their hard work and dedication.
“We are all very passionate about the youth and growing the game of golf. It’s great to see the response we have been getting for this tournament and the growth of juniors and the interests in golf and revamping junior golf.”
Due to inclement weather, the girls and boys 11-13 and boys 14-18 final events were reduced from 36 holes to 27, while the novices managed to complete their full 18 holes over the two days.
