A woman called “a super role-model” by her colleagues has been named the Nurse of the Year by the Bermuda Hospitals Board.Beverley Brangman, 58, a dedicated employee of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for the past 16 years, was handed the top honour yesterday after going beyond the scope of duty. She admits to having a “very deep commitment to nursing” and said: “I work very hard, often come early and leave late.“I am very committed to the staff I work with in my new role as assistant unit manager of Gordon Ward and the role is another way of serving the patients.”She was one of eight nominees all of whom display integrity, high moral standards, impressive qualities as a role model and excellence in nursing care and practice. The other nominees include: Margaret Seymour, Hugh Murray, Lorna Fox, Ellena Sooka, Claire McCullough, Barbara Astwood and Loumeeka Orgill.Ms Brangman has taken over from past winner Lynn Jackson and will be tasked with raising nursing to a higher level than normal on the Island.Over the next year she hopes to encourage nurses to join and take part in the Bermuda Nurses Association; and to meet with young people to promote nursing as a profession.Speaking to The Royal Gazette after her win, Ms Brangman said: “It was quite a shock. You kind of get used to being an unsung person, being committed to something you believe in.“It was quite an experience, which I hope in the year to be able to do honour to and give some positive exposure to nursing.”Ms Brangman graduated with her nursing degree in 1975, but took 15 years out from her career to become a mother and pursue work in baking. She came back to work at the hospital in 1994 and admits she became a nurse “to make a difference and help people be healthy”.“I have always had a passion for health, wellness and healing and I realised that was not only something I was passionate about I was also good at care giving.”In addition to her role at the hospital, she volunteers to give free health screenings to the public, through the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Allen Temple AME and other organisations.
