If you’re planning to do this year’s Catlin End-to-End race you might want to start improving your fitness in readiness for the May event and Health Minister Zane DeSilva and Catlin president Graham Pewter have got just the thing. The pair have launched a get fit programme in advance of the race. Brochures with a recommended training regime will be placed in mailboxes across the Island to encourage residents to begin training for the May 5 End-to-End event.Mr DeSilva said the Get Ready, Get Fit programme would encourage people to not only participate in the event, but improve their overall health.“One of the objectives of the Ministry of Health’s Well Bermuda Strategy is to increase public awareness of the factors influencing health and to foster adoption of healthy lifestyles,” he said.“The Catlin End-to-End also promotes a healthy lifestyle through its series of activities that, over the years, have encouraged our community to be involved in the practice walks and preparation activities.“All of these things, when taken together, can lead to positive lifestyle changes.”Mr DeSilva noted that obesity, diabetes and congestive heart failure are plaguing the Island with local rates exceeding the average for OECD countries. He encouraged participants to see their family doctor for a physical in advance of the event to ensure that they can safely take part, and to learn more about other specific health problems.Since its inception, the Bermuda End-to-End race had raised more than $4 million for various local charities, with this year’s event raising funds for seven organisations.Useful website: www.bermudaendtoend.bm.
