Minister underlines importance of breast cancer awareness

Health Minister Zane DeSilva proclaims October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month on the steps of City Hall this week.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Bermuda Cancer and Health Association has teamed with the Ministry of Health to inform the public about the Island’s fight against breast cancer, its awareness events and the organisations behind Breast Cancer Awareness.An event on the steps of City Hall this week shed light on the disease, pointing to the importance of women receiving routine mammography checks beginning at age 40.Also mentioned were the various activities scheduled throughout October that will promote breast cancer awareness, including a denim day today and a PINK Party at A.S. Coopers on October 11.The Bermuda Cancer and Health Association’s education officer Rhonda Smith-Simmons introduced speakers at City Hall and gave the closing remarks.Health Minister Zane DeSilva touched on the importance of early detection and how mammograms have helped the increase survival rates of those diagnosed with the disease.“When detected early, breast cancer has a five-year survival rate of 98 percent,” he said.“We are urging our mothers, grandmothers, wives, daughters, aunts, sisters, cousins and friends to take time out of their busy schedules to protect the future of their health by scheduling an annual mammogram, seeing their physician and conducting a breast self-examination each month.”
