School given TB all-clear
Heron Bay Primary School parents can rest easy: after a screening for tuberculosis by the Department of Health, no new cases have merged among students.Health officials took action last week after a P3 student tested positive for TB.They announced yesterday that testing in the school had covered 54 “relevant individuals”, and there had been no spread of the TB bacterium.Standard practice is for a second screening in eight to ten weeks. The illness, which is common across the developing world, is seldom seen in Bermuda. Only a few infections are reported each year to the Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit. The infection is air borne, but generally requires close contact with an infected person for TB to spread. Not all infected persons develop TB symptoms — but in either case it can be detected by a skin or blood test, sometimes accompanied by a chest X-ray.Treatment typically results in full recovery.Free screening is on offer at the Hamilton Health Centre, 67 Victoria Street, in the Child Health Clinic, on Mondays through Wednesday from 8.30am to 11.30am.A return visit, two to three days after the test, is required to obtain results.Useful website: www.cdc.gov.
