Health Dept officer to present paper at regional conference

A paper written by a Bermuda Department of Health staff member will be presented at a prestigious conference. The 58th Annual Caribbean Public Health Agency / Caribbean Health Research Council conference will take place in Barbados May 2 through 4, with a special focus on child health. It is the largest health research conference in the English-speaking Caribbean with more than 200 delegates, made up of researchers, policymakers and healthcare providers. The Department of Health paper is about an outbreak of food poisoning caused by precooked ham at a catered breakfast at a local school, which occurred in June 2011. The author is Dy-Juan DeRoza, an assessment officer at the Department of Health. It shows how the poisoning outbreak was traced back to a food handler who did not suffer any symptoms. Minister of Health and Seniors the Patricia Gordon-Pamplin said: “The fact that this paper has been accepted for presentation at such a prestigious health conference clearly demonstrates the abilities of the Department of Health when it comes to identifying and dealing with food-borne illness.”
