No new illnesses reported in Gordon Ward outbreak

A norovirus has been linked to a series of illnesses in Gordon Ward at King Edward VII Memorial in the last week. However, a spokeswoman for the Bermuda Hospitals Board said no new cases of the illness were reported in the Gordon Ward yesterday.“The outbreak investigation will continue until there are no new cases for two incubation periods,” a KEMH spokeswoman said. “Until that time, strict infection prevention measures will remain in place in Gordon Ward, including restricting admissions and transfers, the use of protective wear, enhanced cleaning, and requesting visitors to postpone their visit unless it is urgent.”A total of 16 patients and 17 BHB employees had been affected by gastroenteritis since the outbreak began, but as of yesterday only six remain symptomatic. To prevent the spread of the illness, people are asked to wash their hands thoroughly and regularly with soap and water, particularly after using the bathroom and before handling food. The spokeswoman also advised: “If you are caring for, or visit, someone who has gastroenteritis, make sure the individual washes his or her hands with soap and water, and that you wash your hands with soap and water after any patient contact.“If you are caring for someone who is ill, immediately clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces using bleach cleaner. Remove and wash soiled linens. Use hot water and soap.“And do not prepare food if you have symptoms. Wait three days after you have recovered before handling food again.”For more information about Norovirus and Gastroenteritus visit: http://www.bermudahospitals.bm/health-wellness/conditions-A-Z.asp?chunkiid=222031
