‘Drive through’ flu vaccine jabs on offer

Drive-through anti-flu jabs will be available from Department of Health centres beginning next week.The inoculations cost $10 per shot and are free for seniors.The Flu Express is “a convenient ‘drive through’ way for persons ten years and older to receive the flu vaccine”, said a Government spokesperson.The vaccine is recommended for all persons over the age of six months, but should be a priority for the elderly, any adults in contact with children, persons with chronic medical conditions, pregnant women, healthcare workers and caregivers and persons with chronic medical conditions including diabetes, heart or lung conditions, asthma, sickle cell anaemia and immune system diseases.Those with chronic health problems such as diabetes, chest or heart disease, should inform their doctor when they have been vaccinated. Shots will not be given to anyone allergic to eggs or chicken, who has had a reaction to the shot in the past or who has a fever.The centres offering the Flu Express jabs will be open from 10am until 2pm and are: St George’s: Penno’s Wharf (enter via Tiger Bay Gardens), Tuesday, October 15.Warwick: 70 Middle Road Warwick (under the Rubber Tree), Wednesday, October 16Sandys: St James Church Hall Parking Lot (on Sandys Main Road), Thursday, October 17Hamilton: Hamilton Health Centre, 67 Victoria Street (in the car park), Saturday October 19 and 26.Members of the public are asked to dress comfortably to allow the nurse easy access to the upper arm and to have the correct amount of cash ready as credit/debit card facilities will not be available.
