Premier announces ‘drastic’ Covid-19 containment

The airport will close to all passenger flights at midnight on Friday for two weeks, the Premier said tonight.David Burt added that “only returning residents will be allowed on flights to Bermuda between tomorrow morning and Friday night”.Non-resident air arrivals will be banned from tomorrow.The Government bus service and ferries will be suspended until April 6.The tough containment measures were thrashed out at a meeting of the Emergency Measures Organisation after the island confirmed its first two cases of Covid-19 today.Cargo flights will not be affected.Bermuda’s seaports are now closed to shipping, but “essential cargo operations” to bring food, medical supplies and other essential goods will continue.Schools will be closed tomorrow until April 6, but all principals, teachers and staff should report in the morning to finalise transition plans for distance learning.Bermuda College will have no classes tomorrow or Friday — but classes will resume online starting Monday.College staff were asked to report to work in the morning.Some Legal Affairs departments — including child and family services and residential treatment services — will remain in operation.All other Legal Affairs departments will have reduced operations.Government workers not involved with Covid-19 containment will work from home until April 6.Managers will provide guidance to all civil servants tomorrow.Mr Burt said that private sector businesses should ask staff to work from home if possible, or stagger work duties to minimise the number of people in the workplace.He added the Royal Bermuda Regiment had been partly embodied to support emergency personnel.Mr Burt said bars, restaurants and other social gathering spots were “strongly urged to scale down” from tonight.Essential parts of the retail sector, such as food and medicine, will remain open.Mr Burt added further guidance to businesses will be given tomorrow.He said: “These actions I have announced are drastic, but we are taking them in order to confirm there is not community spread of Covid-19 in Bermuda.”•To read the Premier’s remarks in full, click on the PDF under “Related Media”.
